How much data do I need for 7, 10, or 14 days in Japan?

Short answer

For a Japan trip, Wakamo's editorial estimate is 300 MB a day for light use, 940 MB a day for typical use, and 3720 MB a day for heavy use. These are planning estimates, not measured averages, and each trip total is the high end of a 25% band around the same daily amount the plan page uses.

Totals for 7, 10, and 14 days

Each daily figure is a Wakamo planning estimate, not a measured average. The arithmetic is the plan page's: megabytes a day times the days, divided by 1024. That result sits in a band 25% below and 25% above, and a plan is sized to the high end. The link names the smallest plan currently listed on the Japan plans page that has one allowance for the whole trip, at least as large as that high end, and that lasts the whole trip. Where two plans share a data amount, the shorter one that still lasts the trip is named. If every plan that lasts the trip is smaller than that high end, the cell names the largest of them and says it may not cover the whole estimate by itself. When that plan can be topped up, the cell says so. When a plan that resets daily and states a fair-use speed is listed, the cell names that plan too.

Trip totals for 7, 10, and 14 days from the same estimate as the plan page. A link is the smallest plan that covers the high end, or the largest plan that lasts the trip when none is large enough.

The plan page multiplies the daily amount by the days and divides by 1024. It then shows a band 25% below and 25% above that result, and sizes a plan to the high end of the band. This page uses that same high end for each of 7, 10, and 14 days.Wakamo Japan plan page
The Japan plans page lists each plan's data amount, how long it lasts, whether more data can be added within that validity, and, for a plan that resets daily, the fair-use speed. This page reads that list when it is opened and names the smallest plan with one allowance for the whole trip whose data is at least the high end of the estimate and which lasts at least as long as the trip. Where two plans share a data amount, the shorter one that still lasts the trip is named. If every plan that lasts the trip is smaller than the high end, the cell names the largest of them and says that allowance may not cover the whole estimate by itself. When that plan can be topped up with more data for the same region within its validity, the cell says so. When a plan that resets daily states a fair-use speed, the cell also names the smallest such plan whose daily high-speed allowance meets the high end spread across the days.Wakamo Japan plan page
On iPhone, go to Settings, tap Cellular, then Show All. The cellular data used appears under each app. Turning cellular data off for an app means that app uses only Wi-Fi. On Dual SIM, the list is for the selected cellular data number. Reset Statistics is at the bottom of Cellular. Apple says to contact the carrier for the most accurate usage in the current period.Apple Support, iPhone cellular data
On a Pixel phone, Google says open Settings, tap Network and internet, then SIMs. The total mobile data used is at the top. App data usage shows a graph, a time period, and how much each app used. Data warning and data limit take a number in MB or GB. Google says the phone measures what Settings shows and some carriers measure differently. Some of these steps work only on Android 8.0 and up. If the steps do not match the phone, Google says to check with the device manufacturer.Pixel Help, mobile data usage

FAQ

How much data do I need for 7 days in Japan?

For 7 days, light use is 2 to 3 GB, typical use is 5 to 8 GB, and heavy use is 19 to 32 GB. These are Wakamo planning estimates, not measured averages. The table sizes a plan to the high end of each band and names the smallest plan currently listed that covers it. If none is large enough, it names the largest plan that lasts the trip and says that plan may not cover the estimate by itself.

How much data do I need for 10 days, or for 14?

For 10 days, light use is 2 to 4 GB, typical use is 7 to 11 GB, and heavy use is 27 to 45 GB. For 14 days, light use is 3 to 5 GB, typical use is 10 to 16 GB, and heavy use is 38 to 64 GB. The table sizes a plan to the high end of each band and names the smallest plan currently listed that covers it. If none is large enough, it names the largest plan that lasts the trip and says that plan may not cover the estimate by itself.

What do light, typical, and heavy include?

Light use is a Wakamo planning estimate, not a measured average. It counts background and messaging at 120 MB a day, plus Maps set to normal, 120 MB a day, Social & browsing set to none, Photos posted set to a few, 60 MB a day, Photo/video backup set to off or wifi-only, Streaming set to none, Hotspot set to none. That mix is 300 MB a day. Typical use is a Wakamo planning estimate, not a measured average. It counts background and messaging at 120 MB a day, plus Maps set to normal, 120 MB a day, Social & browsing set to ~30 min/day, 180 MB a day, Photos posted set to a steady stream, 280 MB a day, Photo/video backup set to optimised, 240 MB a day, Streaming set to none, Hotspot set to none. That mix is 940 MB a day. Heavy use is a Wakamo planning estimate, not a measured average. It counts background and messaging at 120 MB a day, plus Maps set to all day, 280 MB a day, Social & browsing set to 1–2 h/day, 400 MB a day, Photos posted set to a steady stream, 280 MB a day, Photo/video backup set to optimised, 240 MB a day, Streaming set to some video, 1600 MB a day, Hotspot set to now and then, 800 MB a day. That mix is 3720 MB a day.

Which plan fits a 7, 10, or 14 day trip?

Compare a plan whose data is at least the high end of the estimate and whose length is at least the trip. The table names the smallest plan on the Japan plans page that has one allowance for the whole trip and meets that test when you open this page. Where two plans share a data amount, it names the shorter one that still lasts the trip. If every plan that lasts the trip is smaller than the high end, the cell names the largest of them and says that allowance may not cover the whole estimate by itself. When that plan can be topped up with more data for the same region within its validity, the cell says so. When a plan that resets daily states a fair-use speed, the cell also names the smallest such plan whose daily high-speed allowance meets the high end spread across the days.

How much does streaming or a hotspot add?

Heavy use sets streaming to some video, 1600 MB a day, and hotspot to now and then, 800 MB a day. Light and typical set both to none. Those amounts are already inside the heavy daily total.

How do I check data use on my own phone?

On iPhone, Settings, then Cellular, then Show All, shows data under each app, and Reset Statistics starts that list over. On a Pixel, Settings, then Network and internet, then SIMs, shows the total, and App data usage lets you pick a time period. Apple says to contact the carrier for the most accurate current period, and Google says some carriers measure differently.
