South Korea eSIM Guide: Install, Connect & Tips

How an eSIM works in South Korea

Incheon Airport's SIM counters are good; they're also at the end of one of the longest immigration-to-arrivals walks of any airport in Asia, and they close. An eSIM removes the stop entirely: buy online before your trip, scan a QR code, and your phone can connect to a supported network after installation and setup in Korea. Your home SIM stays in your phone untouched.

Wakamo's Korea plans ride SK Telecom and LG Uplus, two of Korea's three national carriers, both sold here with 5G capability. The eSIM is a roaming data profile beside your regular SIM: Korean data on the eSIM. Calls and texts on your home number depend on your device and home carrier.

Fetch before you travel; install at your plan’s start time

After payment, open your account to fetch your eSIM. Your order page then shows the QR code, manual details and device instructions, and can send them to you with “Email me my eSIM”.

  • Validity from installation: installing starts the plan clock, even if you keep the line switched off.
  • Validity from destination-network connection: the clock starts when the eSIM first connects to a supported network at your destination.
  • Validity from provider purchase: the clock starts immediately when the provider purchase succeeds after you choose Fetch my eSIM. Buying a Wakamo voucher does not start this period. Waiting to install or connect does not delay it.

A plan purchase stays available for one year from the date of purchase. Installation deadlines vary by plan. Check your purchased plan’s timing and deadline before fetching or installing; do not assume a fixed window. If timing is unavailable, contact support before you fetch or install. You can install at home before you travel when your plan’s timing allows it. If the eSIM still doesn’t work after support helps, we’ll refund you. Refund policy.

Install on your device

Use a stable Wi-Fi connection and follow the iPhone or Android instructions on your secure installation page. Settings labels vary by device and software version. Choose the travel eSIM as your mobile data line and enable roaming for that line when you are ready to use it at your destination.

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Check your exact model on the compatibility page. Keeping your home SIM available for calls and texts depends on your device and carrier; home-carrier roaming charges may apply.

How much data do you need in Korea?

Korea is a dense, high-usage environment: navigation (Naver Map/KakaoMap, not Google Maps), translation apps, food reviews, and constant social posting add up:

  • Maps + translation + messaging: ~300–500 MB/day
  • Social posting + video calls: ~1 GB/day
  • Heavy streaming: 2 GB+/day or a daily plan

Korea plans come in two shapes: fixed plans, with one allowance over a set number of days, and daily plans, whose allowance resets every 24 hours. Past the daily cap you keep a connection at a reduced speed instead of losing service. Sizes, validity and the exact throttle are per-plan values; the plan page shows the live figure for each. TikTok and breakout routing

Korea plans route data through a Singapore exit by default; some carry an HK variant. If TikTok or other geo-restricted apps matter to you, check the plan's breakout note before buying: this is provider guidance carried on every plan page, and it's the same mechanics as a Japan plan that leaves through Singapore instead of Hong Kong.

Network details travelers ask about

  • Carriers: SK Telecom, LG Uplus (5G-capable plans)
  • APN: auto-configured, no manual APN entry needed
  • Top-ups: many Korea plans are reloadable (more data within validity); the plan page states whether top-up is supported. Day extensions are coming soon to Wakamo.
  • Validity options: 7, 15, or 30 days fixed; dailyplans are sold by the day; day extensions are not available

Where to eat (curated recommendations)

Food stops we recommend to travelers, curated from official Seoul and Busan tourism sources, not Wakamo-verified facts:

  • Gwangjang Market (Seoul): one of Seoul's oldest markets: bindaetteok (mung-bean pancake), mayak gimbap, and knife-cut noodles from the stall rows.
  • Myeongdong street food (Seoul): evening street-food lanes around the shopping district (tteokbokki, hotteok, grilled skewers).
  • BIFF Square (Busan): street-food alley near the film-festival venues; known for ssiat hotteok (seed-filled pancakes).
  • Seolleongtang houses (Seoul): ox-bone soup is Seoul's everyday working lunch; old houses around Jongno and City Hall run 24 hours.

Things to do (curated recommendations)

First-visit staples, curated from official tourism sources:

  • Gyeongbokgung Palace (Seoul): the main Joseon royal palace; changing-of-the-guard ceremonies run on a fixed daily schedule.
  • Bukchon Hanok Village (Seoul): hillside lanes of traditional hanok between Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung; a living residential area, keep voices down.
  • Gamcheon Culture Village (Busan): the hillside village of murals and alley stairways.
  • Haeundae Beach (Busan): the city beach with a long coastal walk toward Dalbit observatory.

Practical travel tips (curated)

Everyday logistics, curated from official sources:

  • Navigate with Naver Map or KakaoMap; Google Maps turn-by-turn walking directions are limited in Korea.
  • Load a T-money card (subways, buses, taxis, convenience stores); buy and top up at any convenience store.
  • From Incheon Airport, the AREX express train reaches Seoul Station in under an hour.

FAQ

Does my phone support eSIM? Check the compatibility page.

Can I use Naver Map and KakaoTalk on it? Yes, they're ordinary data apps; no special setup.

What if I run out mid-trip? Reloadable plans top up within validity; non-reloadable plans stop cleanly with no overage charges.

Is 5G included? Plans are sold 5G-capable on SK Telecom / LG Uplus coverage.
